Historical Background
The
Union
Bank
Building
was
built
in
1922
and
designed
by the
Curlett
&
Beelman
,
one
of the
most
successful
architecture
firms
in
Los
Angeles
in the
early
20th
century
. The
building
showed
features
of the
Renaissance
Revival
and
Beaux
Arts
styles
with
facades
of
limestone-colored
terra
cotta
. Its
flat
roof
was
capped
with an
overhanging
decorative
metal
cornice
. The
original
office
entrance
was
adorned
with
decorative
metal
frames
. The
Union
Bank
and
Trust
Company
was
established
by
Kaspare
Cohn
in
1914
under
the
original
name
of
Kaspare
Cohn
Commercial
and
Savings
Bank
.
It
was a
significant
financial
institution
associated
with the
commercial
development
of
Los
Angeles
in the
early
twentieth
century
and the
expansion
of the
downtown
business
district
in the
1920s
.
