Historical Background
The City of Glendale , situated at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley and bisected by the Verdugo Mountains , is considered a suburb of the Greater Los Angeles Area . Originally , Glendale was part of one of California's better known ranchos , Rancho San Rafael , founded by Don Jose Maria Verdugo who settled the area in 1784 . In 1871 the land was partitioned , the town of Glendale subsequently established in 1886 , and incorporated in 1906 . Glendale Adventist Medical Center , originally known as the Glendale Sanitarium , opened in 1905 in the former Glendale Hotel with 75 rooms . The building was purchased from real estate developer Leslie C . Brand . Additions were made in 1905 , 1917 and 1920 . By 1922 , Glendale Sanitarium and Hospital had outgrown its space . A new facility costing $1.25 million was built just east of the City of Glendale and opened in 1924 .
