Marineland
of the
Pacific
. There are
two
large
stadiums
featuring
tanks
for the
marine
animals
, and a
few
smaller
tanks
scattered
throughout
the
grounds
.
Historical Background
Located
on
90
acres
along
the
beach
in
Rancho
Palos
Verdes
,
California
,
Marineland
of the
Pacific
opened
in
1954
. At the
time
,
it
was the
largest
oceanarium
in the
world
. The
largest
tank
had a
circumference
of
250
feet
and
held
1,000,000
gallons
of
water
. The
park
housed
4,000
fish
from
250
different
species
, and
110
marine
mammals
from
11
different
species
,
including
orcas
,
dolphins
,
pilot
whales
,
seals
, and
sea
lions
.
Several
of the
marine
mammals
were
featured
in
acrobatic
shows
, but were also the
subject
of
behavioral
research
. The
park
closed
in
1987
.
