Historical Background
In 1880 Arthur Fremont Gilmore bought a 250-acre lot in Los Angeles County (originally Rancho La Brea) between what is now Fairfax and La Brea Avenues , and started a dairy farm . In the ensuing years , he discovered oil on the property and developed an oil field. " In 1918 , with his grandson , Earl , he expanded the oil production and gas station enterprise to include the first self-serve station . Earl Gilmore added an 18,000-seat sports stadium , baseball park , a poultry farm and a grocery market .
