at the
summit
of
Topanga
Canyon
. On
one
of the
buildings
is
a
sign
advertising
Coca-Cola
, and there
is
a
vista
point
where
a
group
of
people
looks
out
over
the
canyon
.
Mulholland
drive
is
visible
in the
upper
left
.
Historical Background
Located
in the
Santa
Monica
Mountains
,
Topanga
was
first
settled
by
Mexican
citizens
in
1839
. In
1862
,
President
Lincoln's
Homestead
Bill
opened
the
canyon
up
to
further
settlement
.
During
the
1920s
,
it
was a
popular
weekend
destination
for
Hollywood
stars
,
providing
both
privacy
and a
beautiful
natural
setting
.
During
the
1950s
,
blacklisted
actor
Will
Geer
moved
to the
area
, and,
along
with his
friend
Woody
Guthrie
,
created
the
beginnings
of an
artists
'
colony
that
grew
and
flourished
during
the
1960s
.
