Historical Background
In
1896
Colonel
Griffith
Jenkins
Griffith
(1850-1919)
donated
3,015
acres
of his
land
(formerly
Rancho
Los
Felis)
to the
City
of
Los
Angeles
to be
known
as
Griffith
Park
and
used
for
public
recreation
for the "
plain
people.
"
Entertainment
at the
park
would
eventually
include
a
Merry-Go-Round
,
zoo
,
equestrian
center
,
golf
course
and
athletic
fields
,
tennis
courts
, a
picnic
area
at
Crystal
Springs
, the
Municipal
Plunge
,
Boys'
and
Girls'
camps
and the
Griffith
Observatory.When
plans
to
construct
an
observatory
on the
site
were
stalled
, his
attention
turned
to
plans
for the
amphitheater
. In
1916
Griffith
pledged
another
$50,000
and
appointed
a
trust
to
disperse
the
funds
and
supervise
current
and
future
projects
according
to his
wishes
. He
named
his
son
,
Van
, to
oversee
the
Griffith
Trust
and the
construction
of the
theatre
.
Work
on the
Greek
Theatre
began
in
1928
and
opened
on the
night
of
September
25
,
1930
, with an
eclectic
program
of
classical
and
ethnic
performances
that
continue
to this
day
.
