Description
View of the Angel's Flight railway and surrounding buildings at 3rd and Hill Streets in downtown Los Angeles . The cars are painted bright orange and black , and there is an ornate arch at the base of the hill in matching colors . The bottom floor of the Ferguson Building (on the left) is occupied by a Cafe , and there is a traffic signal at the intersection of 3rd and Hil , as well as electric lighting in the tunnel going through the hill .
Historical Background
The Angels Flight Railway began operating in 1901 . Located at 3rd and Hill Streets in downtown Los Angeles , it used a funicular system of two counterbalanced cars moving up and down parallel tracks . The cars were originally painted white , but were repainted to black and orange in 1930 . In 1959 , Angels Flight was slated for demolition as part of the Bunker Hill Urban Renewal Project , but community support succeeded in delaying the dismantling until 1969 . Restoration and reconstruction efforts began in 1995 .
Additional Printed Matter
On back: "Angel's Flight, Los Angeles. Built by Colonel J.W. Eddy, personal friend of President Lincoln, Angel's Flight is the world's shortest railway. It travels a 33% grade for 315 feet and has carried more passengers per mile than any other railroad in the world--100 million in its first 50 years."
