of a
library
building
for
Loyola
University
that was
proposed
for the
new
Westchester
campus
, but was
never
built
.
Historical Background
Loyola
Marymount
University
traces
its
origins
back
to
St
.
Vincent's
College
for
boys
,
founded
in
1865
by the
Vincentian
Fathers
.
When
St
.
Vincent's
closed
in
1911
,
members
of the
Society
of
Jesus
opened
the
high
school
division
of their
newly
founded
Los
Angeles
College
.
Due
to
rapid
growth
, the
college
moved
to a
new
location
in
1917
, on the
campus
of what
is
now
Loyola
High
School
, and
incorporated
as
Loyola
College
of
Los
Angeles
in
1918
.
Graduate
instruction
began
in
1920
with the
foundation
of a
separate
law
school
. The
college
moved
to its
Westchester
campus
in
1929
, and the
school
achieved
university
status
one
year
later
. In
1933
, the
Religious
of
Sacred
Heart
of
Mary
opened
Marymount
Junior
College
in
Westwood
. The
school
later
transferred
classes
to a
new
campus
on the
Palos
Verdes
Peninsula
in
1960
, and
eight
years
later
, the
college
moved
onto the
Loyola
University
campus
, but
remained
an
autonomous
institution
for
five
years
before
merging
to
form
Loyola
Marymount
University
in
1973
. The
library
building
depicted
on the
card
was
designed
for the
new
Westchester
campus
in
1929
by
Thomas
Franklin
Power
, but was
never
constructed
.
