Historical Background
The
new
Venice
Amusement
Pier
,
built
after
the
fire
of
1920
, was
officially
opened
to the
public
on
Independence
Day
,
1921.
" The
Venice
Pier
offered
a
plethora
of
rides
,
games
, and
other
activities
, and
included
roller
coasters
, a
99-foot
Dragon
Slide
, a
new
Ship
Cafe
,
Noah's
Ark
ride
, a
merry-go-round
, a
racing
derby
, and
many
other
activities
. The
new
Venice
Dance
Hall
was
designed
by
architect
Lawrence
Furniss
. Its
dance
floor
could
accommodate
800
couples
, and there were
loges
for
spectators
. "The
Bobs
" was a
twister
style
roller
coaster
designed
by
Frederick
Church
and
Harry
Traver
. In
1946
the
city
council
decided
to
tear
down
the
Venice
pier
. The
pier
was
slowly
demolished
, and what was not
demolished
by
1946
was
destroyed
by a
fire
in
1947
.
