Historical Background
The
area
South
of
Santa
Monica
became
known
as
Ocean
Park
in
1895
, and was
originally
developed
by
Abbot
Kinney
and his
partner
Francis
Ryan
.
Kinney
and
Ryan
built
the
Ocean
Park
Pier
together
in
1898
,
seeking
to
develop
a
fishing
and
pleasure
pier
.
However
,
when
Ryan
died
in
October
1898
,
Kinney
fell
out
with his
new
partners
and the
property
was
divided
.
Kinney
went
on to
develop
the
marshy
southern
part
of the
property
to
create
his "
Venice
of
America
"
while
his
former
partners
developed
Ocean
Park
. The
Ocean
Park
Bathhouse
,
which
opened
in
1905
, was a
monumental
structure
.
It
stood
next
to the
beach
, and
offered
heated
salt
water
swims
for those
who
found
the
Pacific
Ocean
too
cold
or
too
dangerous
. In
1912
the
bathhouse
was
completely
destroyed
by
fire
along
with
Fraser's
newly
built
Million
Dollar
Pier
.
