Historical Background |
Mexican prospectors discovered silver in the area of what would be called Candelaria in 1860, but extensive exploitation of the silver deposits there did not occurr until 1873 when the Northern Belle mine was opened. The Northern Belle would produce some seven million dollars worth in silver. In 1876 Candelaria was established and during the peak years of 1881-1883 for mining, the town had a population of 1500 and twenty-seven saloons. A decade later, Candelaria began the decline into a ghost town, although some silver mining is still carried on in the area. Candelaria was one of the many mining towns that sprung up in western Nevada and eastern California in the latter part of the nineteenth century, to which the Owens Valley was connected economically and culturally. The Carson and Colorado Railroad connected Candelaria to the Owens Valley. |
