Historical Background
Mexican
prospectors
discovered
silver
in the
area
of what would be
called
Candelaria
in
1860
, but
extensive
exploitation
of the
silver
deposits
there
did
not
occurr
until
1873
when
the
Northern
Belle
mine
was
opened
. The
Northern
Belle
would
produce
some
seven
million
dollars
worth
in
silver
. In
1876
Candelaria
was
established
and
during
the
peak
years
of
1881-1883
for
mining
, the
town
had a
population
of
1500
and
twenty-seven
saloons
. A
decade
later
,
Candelaria
began
the
decline
into a
ghost
town
,
although
some
silver
mining
is
still
carried
on in the
area
.
Candelaria
was
one
of the
many
mining
towns
that
sprung
up
in
western
Nevada
and
eastern
California
in the
latter
part
of the
nineteenth
century
, to
which
the
Owens
Valley
was
connected
economically
and
culturally
. The
Carson
and
Colorado
Railroad
connected
Candelaria
to the
Owens
Valley
.
