Historical Background
Located
at the
southern
end
of the
Owen
Valley
,
Lone
Pine
,
California
was
established
in the
1860s
and
served
as
point
to
provide
supplies
to
such
neighboring
mining
camps
as
Cerro
Gordo
. In
1872
,
it
suffered
one
of the
greatest
earthquakes
in
Californian
history
,
estimated
at
7.6
or
greater
on the
Richter
scale
.
During
the
construction
of the
Los
Angeles
Aqueduct
(1908-1913)
,
Lone
Pine
housed
many
of the
aqueduct
workers
and the
Southern
Pacific
Railroad
extended
its
rail
line
to the
town
to
supply
the
work
of
building
the
aqueduct
.
Contemporary
Lone
Pine
hosts
the "
Lone
Pine
Film
Festival
",
which
commemorates
the
area's
use
as a
locale
in
innumerable
Western
films
.
