Historical Background	John McAlpin was, apparently, a partner with John Black in some type of enterprise in Bodie, California, possibly mining since that was the main economic activity of the city. Also, John Black is known to have had mining interests in such places as Chrysopolis, California. Biographical information on McAlpin is wanting. Black was a resident of Bishop, beginning in 1888, where he established a saloon. In 1902 he bought a saloon in Big Pine, and later moved his family there. Voter registration lists from Inyo County in 1922 record his place of residence as Big Pine and his occupation as miner. John Black's wife was Rose, and the two were the parents of Rosalind and J. D. Black. John Black died in 1923 at the age of fifty-eight. The photographer, Oscar S. Dowe, worked in California from 1884-1919. The "Oriental" is perhaps "The Oriental Gallery" operated by Dowe in Ferndale, California, and known to have been in existence in 1890. The "Oriental" may also be the Oriental Photographic Parlors in San Francisco, open at least from 1883-1884 and operated by A. W. Dowe, perhaps a relative of Oscar Dowe.
