east
shore
of
now
dry
Owens
Lake
of the
Owens
Valley
,
Keeler
,
California
, was a
terminus
point
for the
Carson
and
Colorado
Railroad
and also a
shipping
point
for
ore
across
the
Owens
Lake
through
steamboat
service
first
established
in
1872
.
Keeler
was
especially
important
as a
place
of
transit
for the
lead
and
silver
ore
from the
mining
town
of
Cerro
Gordo
,
eight
miles
to the
northeast
in the
nearby
Sierra
Nevada
.
Cerro
Gordo
is
the
greatest
producer
of
lead
and
silver
ore
in the
history
of
California
.
Keeler
survives
today
in a
half-abandoned
state
.
