Historical Background	The ghost town of Chrysopolis, California, is located in the Inyo Range of the Owens Valley. The original settlement began in the early 1860s but soon withered away, and the name was applied to a mining area, which received renewed development in the early 1900s because of the expansion of mining in Death Valley, Tonopah, and Goldfield. This photograph probably records mining at Chrysopolis in the 1910s, the latter stage of the intensified mining that had begun in the early 1900s. John Black, father of J. D. Black, and A. S. Lochrie had mining interests there, and this may be their mine. Voter registration lists from Big Pine in 1922 list Black's occupation as miner.
