Description |
Exterior view of the Santa Monica City Hall on the corner of Fourth Street and Oregon Avenue. |
Historical Background |
Built in the early 1900s, the Santa Monica City Hall was located on the northwest corner of Fourth Street and Oregon Avenue (later Santa Monica Boulevard). The two-story Spanish mission style structure was designed by architect C.H. Brown and built by contractor H.X. Goetz. The building served as the headquarters for the city's municipal government from 1903 to 1938. In 1938, the City Hall relocated to a new building at 1685 Main Street, which was built as one of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects. The original city hall building was sold to James E. MacMurray in 1938 for $167,666, and it was torn down sometime before 1947. |
