Historical Background
The
Los
Angeles
Trust
and
Savings
Bank
moved
to its
new
location
between
Spring
and
Sixth
streets
in
1911
. The
building
in
French
Renaissance
style
with
Corinthian
columns
was
designed
by
John
Parkinson
and
G
.
Edwin
Bergstrom
.
It
was an
eleven-story
steel
frame
structure
built
with
ornamental
bricks
and
terra
cotta
. The
building
was
well
known
for its
unique
circular
door
to the
vault
,
which
was
regarded
as the
thickest
,
largest
, and
strongest
in the
world
at the
time
. In
case
of a
lockout
,
bank
employees
could
access
the
vault
through
an
emergency
hole
. In
1922
, the
bank
changed
its
name
to
Pacific
Southwest
Trust
and
Savings
Bank
.
