Historical Background
The
California
State
Normal
School
was a
teaching
college
founded
in
1862
with its
original
campus
located
in
San
Francisco
. In
1881
, the
first
branch
campus
was
announced
in
downtown
Los
Angeles
, on what
later
became
the
site
of the
Central
Library
of the
Los
Angeles
Public
Library
. In
1887
, the
California
legislature
changed
the
name
of the
two
schools
to
simply
"
State
Normal
School.
" In
1914
, the
school
moved
to a
new
campus
on
Vermont
Avenue
in
Hollywood
.
Twelve
campus
buildings
built
in
1914
were
designed
by
architects
Allison
and
Allison
. In
1919
, the
State
Normal
School
at
Los
Angeles
became
the
Southern
Branch
of the
University
of
California
,
which
later
became
the
University
of
California
,
Los
Angeles
.
