Historical Background |
The California State Normal School was a teaching college founded in 1862 with its original campus located in San Francisco. In 1881, the first branch campus was announced in downtown Los Angeles, on what later became the site of the Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library. In 1887, the California legislature changed the name of the two schools to simply "State Normal School." In 1914, the school moved to a new campus on Vermont Avenue in Hollywood. Twelve campus buildings built in 1914 were designed by architects Allison and Allison. In 1919, the State Normal School at Los Angeles became the Southern Branch of the University of California, which later became the University of California, Los Angeles. |
