James
Winchester
Robinson
opened
his
first
store
named
"The
Boston
Dry
Goods
Store
" at
Spring
and
Temple
Streets
in
1881
. In
1914
, he
moved
to a
new
location
at
7th
Street
and
opened
an
upscale
department
store
under
the
new
name
, "
J
.
W
.
Robinson
Co.
" In the
1910s
,
7th
Street
was
becoming
a
dynamic
commercial
district
transforming
from
agricultural
land
since
the
arrival
of the
Southern
Pacific
Railroad
brought
population
explosion
as
well
as
commercial
center's
growth
. The
first
building
was
designed
by
Noonan
and
Richards
, and
it
was
remodeled
by
Edward
L
.
Mayberry
in
1934
. The
department
store
was
later
acquired
by
May
department
store
in
1987
.
