Historical Background
The
Southern
Pacific
Arcade
Depot
was
one
of
three
railroad
depots
that
served
the
Los
Angeles
area
before
the
construction
of
Union
Station
in
1939
. The
Arcade
Depot
was
originally
constructed
in
1888
at
5th
and
Central
streets
, on
acreage
originally
owned
by
William
Wolfskill
and
used
for
cultivating
the
first
commercial
orange
grove
in
Southern
California
. In
1914
, the
station
was
rebuilt
on an
adjoining
site
, and
renamed
Central
Station
.
Central
Station
also
became
the
site
of the
Union
Pacific
Railroad's
downtown
Los
Angeles
passenger
terminal
in
1924
when
its
original
passenger
depot
was
destroyed
by
fire
. The
Central
Station
,
along
with the "
La
Grande
"
Santa
Fe
Railroad
Passenger
Depot
, was
replaced
in
1939
by
Union
Station
and
later
demolished
.
