Second City Hall building; engraved date on building in Roman Numerals; person walking on sidewalk to the left. |
Historical Background |
The original City Hall building was located on Spring Street in an adobe structure that also housed the City Jail. A second City Hall was built on Broadway between 2nd and 3rd streets in 1888. Construction on the second City Hall began in 1888 on Fort Street. It was completed in 1889, the same year the name Fort Street was changed to Broadway. That year, the city library, consisting of 6,000 volumes, was moved to rooms in the new City Hall. The third and current City Hall, located on Spring Street, was completed in 1928. |
