is
surrounded
by
colored
jets
of
water
.
City
lights
and
neon
signs
are
dimly
visible
in the
background
.
Historical Background
Beverly
Hills'
electric
fountain
is
situated
on the
northeast
corner
of
Wilshire
and
Santa
Monica
Boulevards
, at the
entrance
to
Beverly
Gardens
park
.
It
was
erected
in
1931
at a
cost
of
$22,000
. The
fountain
was
designed
by
Ralph
C
.
Flewelling
, and
featured
changing
patterns
of
jets
of
water
lit
by
colored
lights
. The
jets
and
colors
were
originally
timed
to
display
60
different
combinations
every
eight
minutes
. In the
center
of the
fountain
is
a
statue
sculpted
by
Merrell
Gage
of a
Tongva
woman
kneeling
in
prayer
for
rain
. The
statue
sits
on a
pedestal
in a
circular
pool
with
bas-relif
cavrings
depicting
California
history
along
its
walls
.
