Historical Background
Franklin
Canyon
is
a
3.5-mile
gorge
in the
Santa
Monica
Mountains
above
Beverly
Hills
. In
1914
, the
Los
Angeles
Department
of
Water
and
Power
built
a
reservoir
in
upper
Franklin
Canyon
to
distribute
water
brought
in from the
Owens
Valley
.
Oil
tycoon
Edward
Doheny
built
a
Spanish
style
home
in
lower
Franklin
Canyon
in
1935
,
which
served
as a
family
retreat
. The
canyon
was
slated
for
development
during
the
1970s
, but was
preserved
when
the
National
Park
Service
purchased
the
land
,
making
it
a
part
of the
Santa
Monica
Mountains
National
Recreation
Area
.
Running
through
part
of
Franklin
Canyon
is
Mulholland
Drive
,
named
for
William
Mulholland
, the
head
of the
Los
Angeles
Department
of
Water
and
Power
and
engineer
of the
Los
Angeles
Aqueduct
. The
serpentine
route
,
winding
over
21
miles
from
Leo
Carillo
State
Beach
in the
west
to
Hollywood's
Cahuenga
Pass
in the
east
,
officially
opened
to
great
fanfare
on
December
26
,
1924
.
