Historical Background	Wilshire Boulevard is a major thoroughfare running 20 miles from Downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean. It passes through MacArthur Park (formerly named Westlake Park) and several major shopping areas including Beverly Hills, the "Miracle Mile", and Westwood. The first Brown Derby restaurant opened in 1926 at 3427 Wilshire Boulevard, across from the Ambassador Hotel. This location, built in the shape of a hat 30 feet in diameter, moved one block away in 1937. A second location, at 1628 Vine Street, near Hollywood Boulevard, followed in 1929, becoming a popular hangout for celebrities. In 1931, a third Brown Derby opened in Beverly Hills, at 9537 Wilshire Boulevard. The fourth and final location opened in Los Feliz in 1941. All but the Los Feliz location closed in the 1980s. The Beverly Wilshire Hotel, opened on new year's day in 1927, on the former site of the Los Angeles Speedway. It was designed by architects Walker and Eisen, and featured a marble lobby, chandeliered dining rooms and ballrooms, an orchestra which played at luncheons, and a weekly fashion review. It was renovated in the 1940s to include a swimming pool and spa, tennis courts, and the Copa Club. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
