populated

oil
derricks
.
Historical Background
The
City
of
Torrance
is
located
19
miles
southwest
of
downtown
"
Los
Angeles
, on
lands
that were
once
part
of the
Rancho
San
"
Pedro
. In
1911
,
Pasadena
financier
and
philanthropist
Jared
"
Sidney
Torrance
bought
3,500
acres
of
land
from the
Dominguez
"
family
,
planning
to
turn
it
into a
modern
,
industrial
city
with
business
,
industrial
, and
residential
districts
.
It
was
well
situated
to
make
use
of
nearby
San
Pedro
, the
major
shipping
port
for
Southern
California
.
Torrance
hired
landscape
architects
John
C
. and
Frederick
Law
Olmstead
,
Jr
. to
lay
out
the
townsite
, and
archited
Irving
Gill
to
oversee
the
construction
. The
plan
incorporated
ample
space
for
public
parks
, and
included
the
planting
of
over
300,000
trees
. The
citizens
voted
355-to-11
to
incorporate
in
1921
. The
discovery
of
oil
in
Torrance
in the
1920s
brought
prosperity
to the
area
, and
it
remains
a
major
oil-producing
region
for the
SOuthern
California
area
.
