Description
A
view
of
East
Colorado
St
. at
Fair
Oaks
Ave
. in
downtown
Pasadena
,
California
. The
building
on the
corner
with the
dome
and
spire
is
the
First
National
Bank
. The
street
is
crowded
with
horse-drawn
carts
,
pedestrians
,
bicycles
, and
trolley
cars
.
Overhead
, a
dense
network
of
wires
crisscrosses
the
street
.
Historical Background
The
city
of
Pasadena
incorporated
in
1886
. That
same
year
, the
city
auctioned
off
five
acres
of
land
around
Colorado
Street
east
of
Fair
Oaks
avenue
,
which
sparked
rapid
growth
in this
area
.
Colorado
Street
(redesignated
Colorado
Boulevard
in
1958)
became
the
main
thoroughfare
for
downtown
Pasadena
. The
following
decade
saw
the
installation
of a
sewer
system
,
paved
roads
, and
electric
street
lighting
. The
First
National
Bank
opened
at the
corner
of
Colorado
Street
and
Fair
Oaks
Avenue
in
1886
.
It
was
designedy
by
architecht
Harry
Ridgway
and
advertised
itself
as a
fireproof
structure
.
It
rented
retail
spaces
facing
Colorado
Avenue
, and
offices
on the
upper
floors
.
Beginning
in
1929
,
city
officials
decided
to
widen
Colorado
street
in
order
to
reduce
congestion
. In
order
to
do
so
, the
first
14
feet
of
buildings
along
Colorado
Street
were
removed
, and
nearly
all
of the
original
Victorian
building
facades
were
lost
.
