Historical Background
Wilshire
Boulevard
is
a
major
thoroughfare
extending
from
Downtown
Los
Angeles
to the
Pacific
Ocean
.
It
passes
through
MacArthur
Park
(formerly
named
Westlake
Park)
and
several
major
shopping
areas
including
Beverly
Hills
, the "
Miracle
Mile
", and
Westwood
, and
alongside
Lafayette
Park
(formerly
named
Sunset
Park)
"
Westlake
Park
was
originally
developed
by
William
Workman
in the
1880s
. In its
natural
state
, the
area
was an
undesirable
ravine
, but
Mr
.
Workman
organized
the
creation
of a
lake
and
brought
in
tons
of
fertilizer
to
create
a
lush
,
green
park
.
It
offered
boating
,
meandering
paths
, and a
space
for
outdoor
concerts
.
Originally
,
Wilshire
Boulevard
ended
at the
lake
, but was
extended
in
1934
to
pass
through
the
park
. The
park
was
renamed
in
honor
of
General
Douglas
MacArthur
in
1942
.
