Description	A daytime view of Westlake Park, looking out across the lake. In the foreground, visitors stroll or bicycle along the road, and several small boats are out on the lake. There is a small gazebo on the nearer shore, and a larger boathouse on the farther shore.
Historical Background	Wilshire Boulevard is a major thoroughfare running 20 miles from Downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean. It passes through MacArthur Park (formerly named Westlake Park) and several major shopping areas including Beverly Hills, the "Miracle Mile", and Westwood, and alongside Lafayette Park (formerly named Sunset Park)" Westlake Park was originally developed by William Workman in the 1880s. In its natural state, the area was an undesirable ravine, but Mr. Workman organized the creation of a lake and brought in tons of fertilizer to create a lush, green park. It offered boating, meandering paths, and a space for outdoor concerts. Originally, Wilshire Boulevard ended at the lake, but was extended in 1934 to pass through the park. The park was renamed in honor of General Douglas MacArthur in 1942.
