Historical Background
The
Church
of
St
.
Vincent
de
Paul
,
sometimes
called
the
St
.
Vincent
Cathedral
,
is
located
at
621
W
.
Adams
Blvd
. in the
West
Adams
district
of
Los
Angeles
.
Oil
tycoon
Edward
Doheny
gave
roughly
one
million
dollars
for the
project
, on the
condition
that the
new
church
be
modeled
after
the
cathedrals
in
Mexico
, of
which
Mrs
.
Estelle
Doheny
was
very
fond
. The
church
was
designed
by
architect
Albert
C
.
Martin
in a
Spanish
baroque
style
featuring
a
tile-inlaid
dome
over
the
transept
, and a
tall
bell
tower
at the
southwest
corner
. The
exterior
is
decorated
with
statuary
and
friezes
, and the
interior
with
murals
,
carvings
,
marble
, and
bronze
. The
building
was
completed
in
1925
.
Prior
to the
church's
completion
,
parishioners
had been
meeting
in an
1887
church
building
on the
campus
of
St
.
Vincent's
College
,
which
later
became
Loyola
College.
"
Between
1880
and
1925
,
West
Adams
was a
fashionable
neighborhood
for the
very
wealthy
, and
many
of
Los
Angeles
'
finest
architects
designed
homes
there.
During
the
1950s
and
1960s
, the
construction
of the
Santa
Monica
and
Harbor
Freeways
resulted
in the
destruction
of
many
historic
buildings
, but in the
1990s
,
three
areas
of
West
Adams
were
designated
as
Historic
Preservation
Overlay
Zones
by the
city
of
Los
Angeles
,
preventing
further
destruction
.
