A view of Hollenbeck park, with swans on the grass in the foreground, and paths and a small waterway with a bridge over it winding through the park. Behind the bridge is a small boathouse. On the far shore, a woman sits on a bench. |
Historical Background |
Hollenbeck Park was dedicated in 1893, on 26 acres in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, between Fourth Street and Boyle Avenue. The land was donated in 1890-91 by William H. Workman and Mrs. J. E. Hollenbeck. Mr. Workman donated two-thirds of the land, and Mrs. Hollenbeck donated the remaining third. The park was originally going to be named Workman-Hollenbeck park, but Mr. Workman declined the offer. The park's main feature was a ravine that was converted to a lake, circled by a winding footpath. It offered a quiet space for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and picnicking. In the 1950s, the Golden State Freeway was built, passing through the park and reducing its area. |
