. On the

Historical Background
Hollenbeck
Park
was
dedicated
in
1893
, on
26
acres
in the
Boyle
Heights
neighborhood
,
between
Fourth
Street
and
Boyle
Avenue
. The
land
was
donated
in
1890-91
by
William
H
.
Workman
and
Mrs
.

.
Hollenbeck
.
Mr
.
Workman
donated
two-thirds
of the
land
, and
Mrs
.
Hollenbeck
donated
the
remaining
third
. The
park
was
originally
going
to be
named
Workman-Hollenbeck
park
, but
Mr
.
Workman
declined
the
offer
. The
park's
main
feature
was a
ravine
that was
converted
to a
lake
,
circled
by a
winding
footpath
.
It
offered
a
quiet
space
for
recreational
activities
such
as
fishing
,
boating
, and
picnicking
. In the
1950s
, the
Golden
State
Freeway
was
built
,
passing
through
the
park
and
reducing
its
area
.
