Historical Background
Elysian
Park
is
located
near
downtown
Los
Angeles
, and
is
the
city's
oldest
public
park
.
Occupying
575-acres
,
it
is
the
city's
second
largest
park
(after
Griffith
Park)
.
It
is
home
to
numerous
historic
sites
,
including
the
Los
Angeles
Police
Academy
and
Barlow
Hospital
.
Under
Spanish
rule
, the
site
was
used
as a
rock
quarry
.
When
the
United
States
took
control
of the
land
in
1849
, the
government
surveyed
the
area
intending
to
auction
the
land
, but the
Rock
Quarry
Hills
were
considered
unsuitable
for
building
, and
remained
city
property
. In
1886
, the
area
was
officially
dedicated
as
Elysian
Park
, and
became
a
popular
recreation
area
,
offering
ample
picnic
grounds
, an
arboretum
,
zoological
garden
, and
aviary
. The
Figueroa
Street
Tunnels
are a
set
of
four
tunnels
that
cut
through
the
park
,
providing
passage
for the
northbound
State
Route
110
(the
Pasadena
Freeway)
" The
tunnels
were
completed
between
1931
and
1935
,
connecting
Figueroa
Street
with
downtown
.
