Historical Background
Newhall
is
located
in the
Santa
Clarita
valley
, and was
originally
part
of the
Rancho
San
Francisco
land
grant
.
Between
1872
and
1875
,
businessman
Henry
Mayo
Newhall
purchased
ranchos
in
central
and
southern
California
,
including
the
Rancho
San
Francisco
.
Anticipating
the
success
of the
railroads
,
Newhall
granted
a
right
of
way
through
his
lands
in the
Santa
Clarita
Valley
to the
Southern
Pacific
Railway
,
thereby
enabling
the
first
tracks
connecting
Los
Angeles
and
San
Francisco
. He also
sold
them a
parcel
of
land
along
the
tracks
for a
whistle-stop
. He
named
the
station
Saugus
,
after
his
hometown
in
Massachusets
. The
railroad
company
began
designing
a
new
town
around
the
station
, and
named
it
Newhall
.
Prior
to
1987
,
Newhall
existed
as an
independent
but
unincorporated
town
, but in
1987
,
Newhall
,
Valencia
,
Canyon
Country
, and
Saugus
consolidated
to
form
the
City
of
Santa
Clarita
.
