Historical Background	Sunland-Tujunga is located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, about 14 miles north of the Los Angeles civic center. Spanish settlement of the Sunland-Tujunga area occurred between 1769 and 1822. Mission San Gabriel, founded in 1771, brought prosperity to the area. After the secularization of the missions, the lands were converted to ranchos. Rancho Tujunga encompassed the area that later became Sunland, Tujunga, Lake View Terrace, and Shadow Hills. In 1842, gold was discovered a few miles north of Rancho Tujunga, bringing prospectors and other opportunists to the area. As the result of an economic down-turn in the years after the gold rush, the land was subdivided and sold. In 1932, the area was annexed to the city of Los Angeles. During the first half of the 20th century, the area consisted mostly of ranch land and orchards. Much of the area has since been converted to houses or apartment and condominium buildings and some small commercial development, though remnants of the orchards and ranches can still be seen.
