Historical Background
The
1,152
foot-long
Glendale-Hyperion
Viaduct
,
completed
in
June
,
1927
, was
constructed
as a
means
of
relieving
congestion
in a
heavily-trafficked
area
.
Popularly
known
as the
Hyperion
Bridge
,
it
connected
the
newly-opened
Hyperion
Avenue
in the
Griffith
Park
area
of the
Hollywood
community
with
Glendale
Boulevard
in the
Atwater
area
of the
Northeast
Los
Angeles
community
, and
spanned
the
Los
Angeles
River
. The
viaduct
was also
known
as the "
Victory
Memorial
Bridge
" in
honor
of the
men
who
served
in
World
War
I
.
