Historical Background
The
Los
Angeles
Times
began
publication
in
1881
under
the
title
, the
Los
Angeles
Daily
Times
, and in
1882
,
editorship
was
given
to
Colonel
Harrison
Gray
Otis
,
who
made
the
paper
a
financial
success
. In
October
of
1910
, in
response
to
Otis'
anti-union
efforts
,
unionists
bombed
the
Times'
headquarters
at the
corner
of
1st
and
Broadway
. In
1911
,
construction
began
on a
new
headquarters
,
located
at
1st
and
Spring
Streets
. The
new
building
opened
in
1935
and was, at the
time
, the
largest
building
in the
United
States
designed
and
occupied
as a
daily
newspaper
publishing
operation
.
It
was
designed
by
Gordon
B
.
Kauffmann
, and
won
a
gold
medal
at the
1937
Paris
Exposition
for its
Moderne
architectural
style
.
