Historical Background
The
Court
Flight
was
built
by
Samuel
G
Vandegrift
, to
serve
the
wealthy
Bunker
Hill
neighborhood
.
Constructed
in
1904
,
it
rose
200
feet
in
about
the
same
horizontal
distance
,
running
between
Broadway
and
Court
Streets
, in the
middle
of the
block
between
Temple
and
First
Streets
.
City
regulations
mandated
that there be a
stairway
running
parallel
to the
track
for
persons
who
did
not
want
to
pay
for the
ride
,
thereby
preventing
a
monopoly
. The
railway
underwent
renovations
in
1936
, but
closed
in
1943
when
the
line
was
damaged
by a
fire
.
