Historical Background	The California State Normal School was a teaching college founded in 1862 whose original campus was located in San Francisco. In 1881, the first branch campus was announced in downtown Los Angeles, on what later became the site of the Central Library of the Los Public Library system. In 1887, the California legislature changed the name of the two normal schools to simply "State Normal School." In 1914, the school moved to a new campus on Vermont Avenue in Hollywood. In 1919, the State Normal School at Los Angeles became the Southern Branch of the University of California, which became the University of California, Los Angeles.
