Description	A view of Central Park in Downtown Los Angeles. Several people can be seen throughout the park, and in the foreground, a boy is selling newspapers. In the distance, the upper part of the State Normal School building can be seen.
Historical Background	The park depicted on this card was established in 1866 by former Mayor Cristobal Aguilar, and is bounded by 5th Street to the north, 6th Street to the south, Hill Street to the east, and Olive Street to the west. It was known by several names, including La Plaza Abaja, Los Angeles Park, 6th Street Park, and Central Park before being renamed Pershing Square in 1918, in honor of the World War I general. During World War I, the Square was often the scene for militia receptions and provided a forum for public speakers. In 1952, the entire park was excavated to build an 1800-car underground parking garage topped by a thin layer of lawn, but in 1992, the park underwent a major $14.5-million renovation designed by architect Ricardo Legorreta and landscapist Laurie Olin, re-opening in 1994 with a new layout incorporating sculpture and other forms of public art. The California State Normal School was a teaching college founded in 1862 whose original campus was located in San Francisco. In 1881, the first branch campus was announced in Los Angeles, on what later became the site of the Central Library of the Los Public Library system. In 1887, the California legislature changed the name of the two normal schools to simply "State Normal School." In 1919, the State Normal School at Los Angeles became the Southern Branch of the University of California, now the University of California, Los Angeles.
