Historical Background
Mount
St
.
Mary's
College
is
a
Catholic
women's
college
,
founded
in
1925
by the
Sisters
of
St
.
Joseph
of
Carondelet
.
Mount
St
.
Mary's
was
housed
temporarily
at
St
.
Mary's
Academy
at
Slauson
and
Crenshaw
in
Los
Angeles
until
, in
1928
, the
Sisters
purchased
36
acres
of
land
among
the
foothills
of the
Santa
Monica
mountains
. The
College
graduated
its
first
students
in
1929
at the
new
Campus
.
Twenty
years
later
, the
College
added
an
additional
20
acres
to
campus
, and in
1962
,
added
a
second
campus
on the
Doheny
Estate
near
downtown
Los
Angeles
. In
1952
, the
college
granted
its
first
baccalaureate
degree
in
nursing
, and
began
offering
graduate
degree
programs
in
1955
.
