Historical Background
Paul
de
Longpre
(1855-1911)
was a
famous
painter
from
Lyon
,
France
,
known
for his
flower
paintings
.
De
Longpre
moved
to
Los
Angeles
around
1898
. In the
early
1900s
,
de
Longpre
purchased
a
plot
of
land
located
on the
corner
of
Cahuenga
Boulevard
and
Hollywood
Boulevard
,
where
he
built
a
lavish
mansion
in a
Moorish
style
with a
three
acre
garden
surrounding
the
home
.
De
Longpre's
home
quickly
became
one
of
Hollywood's
first
tourist
attractions
and
could
be
seen
on the
Pacific
Electric
railway's
Balloon
Route
Excursion
. The
building
was
torn
down
a
few
years
after
his
death
in
1911
.
