Historical Background
Lincoln
Park
,
located
at the
east
corner
of
Mission
Road
and
Valley
Boulevard
,
is
one
of
Los
Angeles
'
oldest
public
parks
.
Although
the
first
date
of the
park
is
usually
given
as
1874
,
it
was
officially
dedicated
in
1883
.
Lincoln
Park
was
originally
known
as
East
Los
Angeles
Park
and
later
as
East
Lake
Park
. The
park
only
became
known
as
Lincoln
Park
after
Lincoln
High
School
was
built
in
1914
. By the
early
twentieth
century
,
Lincoln
Park
was a
45-acre
park
that
contained
picturesque
gardens
, a
man-made
lake
covering
around
8
acres
, a
boathouse
,
beautiful
walkways
, and a
carousel
(which
burned
down
in
1976)
" The
park
also
included
several
conservatories
which
housed
exotic
plants
and
hosted
many
horticultural
exhibitions
. The
original
conservatories
were
removed
by the
late
1950s
,
when
the
city
added
a
swimming
pool
,
picnic
pavilion
, and
bathhouse
at the
former
site
of the
conservatories
.
Additional Printed Matter
On back: "A tract of about 45 acres, a delightful place for picnics, affords more of interest for children, as it has a merry-go-round, swings and a lake for boating."
