Description |
View of the Venice Union Polytechnic High School as it stood on Venice Boulevard sometime before 1933. |
Historical Background |
When Venice, California's first high school session began in 1911, classes were temporarily held at the remodeled Abbot Kinney Bath House on Windward and Second Streets. In 1913, property was purchased on Venice Boulevard, and groundbreaking ceremonies were held October 28, 1914 for the new Venice Union Polytechnic High School. The buildings were designed by architect C. H. Russell and were based on the structures of Northern Italy. In the Spring of 1933, an earthquake caused severe damage to the school building, and classes were held in temporary tents for two years before construction began on a new high school building in 1935. |
