Historical Background
Built
in the
early
1900s
,
Santa
Monica's
City
Hall
was
located
on the
northwest
corner
of
Fourth
Street
and
Oregon
Avenue
(later
Santa
Monica
Boulevard)
. The
two-story
mission-style
structure
was
designed
by
architect
C.H
.
Brown
and
built
by
contractor
H.X
.
Goetz
. The
building
served
as the
headquarters
for the
city's
municipal
government
from
1903
to
1938
. In
1938
City
Hall
was
relocated
to a
new
building
at
1685
Main
Street
, a
structure
built
as
one
of the
Works
Progress
Administration
(WPA)
projects
. The
original
city
hall
building
was
sold
to
James
E
.
MacMurray
in
1938
for
$167,666
and was
torn
down
sometime
before
1947
.
