Miss Mary Workman,

Los Angeles, Cal.
My dear Miss Workman:
It is with a great deal of regret that I write to you to acknowledge your proposal to resign after these many years from the direction of the Brownson House. I am very glad to say that it is not in my power to accept your resignation. I did not appoint you. I fancy that you were elected in some formal way. Your resignation must be made to the Brownson House Association or to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors of the Brownson House Association would then, in the formal way, elect a new President and submit the name to me.
I do hope, however, that you will continue to do the excellent work that you have been doing. It must be a great consolation to you to look back on so many years of unselfish labor spent among the poor children and to see other off-shoots of the work that you undertook in earlier days blossoming forth.
When a great work is now being undertaken in the Mexican quarters, especially then those who are hostile to our faith are working so zealously, it is regretted that our greatest worker and most intelligent should drop out. However, I am sure you have given the matter very careful and prayerful consideration.
May I not express my sincere thanks to you for all that you have done. You will mark what I say about the resignation. I have no authority to receive your resignation.
Very sincerely yours,
[singed] John J. Cantwell
Bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles.
