The letter asks subscribers to renew or to become a new subscriber and includes a form at the bottom that can be filled out with name, address, amount promised, how payable, and amount enclosed. The left-most column includes testimonials in support of Brownson House's work.
Historical Background	Mary Julia Workman founded the Brownson House Settlement Association in 1901 and led it for 19 years. The Brownson House assisted underprivileged and immigrant families in the city, providing them with educational, vocational and social programs such as student clubs, Sunday school, dances, and sporting events. Brownson House was originally located in a rented cottage on Aliso St., but moved to a new facility on Jackson St. in late 1904 or early 1905.

MARY YOUNG MOORE MISS NORA DESMOND [Main column:] [pointing hand] BROWNSON HOUSE NEEDS $5000 THE BROWNSON HOUSE WORK BROWNSON HOUSE is a far-reaching center for work with the foreign-born. From July 1, 1918, to date, 7325 calls were made at the Settlement House by foreign-born men and women who came from all sections of Los Angeles and environs, seeking assistance in every kind of perplexity. These strangers in our midst ask for interpretation of the new life in the United States. Brownson House co-operates with them in solving their many problems or connects them with the proper agencies. UNITING NATIVE-BORN AND FOREIGN-BORN During the same period of time, 1402 friendly visits were made in the homes of the foreign-born by the Settlement workers. Brownson House is doing a vital work. In practical ways, it is uniting native-born and foreign-born in a common devotion to American ideals. CO-OPERATIVE HELPFULNESS In addition, varied activities for adults and children are carried on within the Settlement House. In the clinics the number of new patients, since Jully last, was 240, and the aggregate clinic attendance was 722. The whole work is co-opera-tive. It helps people to help themselves. It is responsive to every emergency of human need. It fosters the spiritual aspirations which are the foundation of good citizenship. APPEAL FOR FINANCIAL AID ONLY ONCE THE ENTIRE YEAR Brownson House Settlement Association appeals for financial aid only once in the entire year. If you are a subscriber, will you renew your subscription now? If you are not a subscriber, will you become one by sending a contribution of any amount you desire? This is a plan which suits all pocketbooks. Remember that the work needs your assistance, especially in these days of readjustment after the stress of war.
