Description	Resolution dated February 21, 1918 signed by the directors of the Brownson House Settlement Association recording their "sentiments of profound sympathy" for their "beloved" association president, Mary J. Workman, over the death of her father, William H. Workman.
Historical Background	Mary Julia Workman founded the Brownson House Settlement Association in 1901 and led it for 19 years. The Brownson House assisted underprivileged and immigrant families in the city, providing them with educational, vocational and social programs such as student clubs, Sunday school, dances, and sporting events. Dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, the Workman family holds a distinguished place in Los Angeles history. Two brothers, David (1798-1855) and William (1800-1876), originally from England, were the first Workmans to settle in Los Angeles. William H. Workman (1839-1918), the son of David, and his wife Maria Elizabeth, and father to Mary Julia Workman, made his mark in Los Angeles politics and the development of the city infrastructure. The most important civic office that William H. Workman held was mayor of Los Angeles, from 1887 to 1888.

Transcription	[handwritten:] February 21, 1918 [typewritten body:] WHEREAS, our beloved President of Brownson House Settlement Association, Mary J. Workman, has sustained a great bereavement in the death of her father, Hon. William H. Workman; and, WHEREAS, the said Hon. William H. Workman was an exemplary man, and honored citizen, a devoted husband, and an affectionate father; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED, the Brownson House Settlement Association records its sentiments of profound sympathy for its beloved President in this sad hour and prays the merci-ful God will graciously sustain her and the members of her family in this severe trial; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that these Resolutions be spread upon the minutes of our meetings and a copy sent to our beloved President, Mary J.
