Mrs. Mary J. Workman,
Brownson House,
711 Jackson street,
Los Angeles, California.
My dear Mrs. Workman:
I do not feel that you are a stranger when I write to you as the name you have borne for many years is in honor in your city. Be assured that I am deeply appreciative of your more than kind let-ter received this morning.
From all that I heard from my good friend, Bishop Conaty, you are very modest in what you say about the work of the Brownson House. You will permit me, please God, some time in the future to see what you do with my own eyes.
It is a great joy to me to see so many charitable activi-ties under Catholic auspices in the City of Los Angeles. Assuredly what we give to the poor we are sending to the Lord.
With the best of good wishes to yourself and your associates in the Brownson House, I remain,
Always devotedly yours in Christ,
